Find computer name without logging in

If you need to know the name of a computer but do not have the appropriate login credentials you can still find the name of the PC at the login screen.

Workgroup Computer

  1. On login screen type .\ in the login field, DO NOT hit enter
  2. The computer name will be displayed under the password field


Domain Computer

  1. On login screen, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click Other User.
  2. Click How do I log on to another domain?
  3. PC name will be displayed in a dialogue box.
